Integrated Health Curriculum

ORYDS developed an Integrated Health Curriculum to address nutrition, health, and wellness.  Students are provided with a healthy breakfast, lunch and snack using the MyPlate.gov menu.  We have partnered with the Providence YMCA in Kansas City, KS to provide weekly differentiated swimming lessons for our students.  “Kids in the Kitchen” is a program where students learn about nutritional foods and how to prepare healthy foods and snacks. Physical fitness activities are crucial to our bodies and overall healthy well being. ORYDS provides an array of playground activities and sports for all students to enjoy and participate.

Entreprenuership

ORYDS is excited to provide all of our scholars age 6 on up with a youth-based entrepreneur curriculum. The curriculum introduces and piques students’ interest in entrepreneurship as a career choice.  The program is interactive and experimental and will allow students to learn and practice skills to develop, design, and test new business models and concepts. Students will learn how to develop, market, and manage their own business using cross disciplinary support from the ORYDS curriculum.

Character Education and Development

This is a character education program that we use to teach the qualities of good character and ethics. We also discuss self-esteem and anti-bullying issues with the children.

Oak Ridge Empowerment Zone

A newly designed program for students in grades 6-8 that encourages student empowerment, academic student success, entrepreneurial spirit and fosters students to participate in community service.  Students will receive strong academic support in the areas of Literacy (reading7writing) and mathematics during the morning hours and have empowerment sessions in the afternoon.  These empowerment sessions will strengthen their abilities by allowing them to foster opportunities in mindful character building by physically engaging with community leaders from the Greater Kansas City Area by the way of speakers, fieldtrips and community service activities. Students will also participate in entrepreneurial lessons and activates that will encourage their own creativity.  This is a fast paced 6 week opportunity for students with motivation, creativity, discipline and who strive for excellence. Special Note: There are 16 slots for this program given on a first come bases.

Chess Club

Chess has long been regarded as a game that can have beneficial effects on learning on development, especially when it is played from a young age.  At Oak Ridge, our students learn how to play chess and they have the opportunity to compete with each other.  Our Chess Club has proven to be a success and it has made an educational impact on some of the students.

Some of the benefits include:

  • Learn to engage in deep and thorough chess research which will help them build their confidence in their ability to do academic research.
  • Help children gain insights into the nature of competition which will help them in any competitive endeavor.
  • When youngsters play chess they must call upon higher-ordered thinking skills, analyze actions and consequences and visualize future possibilities.

Enrollment begins March 1st through June 1st, 2024
